COLLAGE PROJECT
COLOR- I chose to use complementary colors in the background of my childhood pictures. I lived a very exciting childhood and complementary colors exemplify the state of my adolescence. In the bottom right of the picture I used a splattering technique around a person on a microphone. This person is my future. The splattering of bright colors represents how I’m going to explode into the world.
LIGHT- I used black and white pictures on top of colored backgrounds. This represents how my past is behind me, and I am looking towards the future.
TEXTURE- I used paper to make backgrounds, which adds some texture. I also used a piece of cloth to fill in an outline of a person on a microphone. The cloth makes it seem like my future is tangible, because I can feel it.
VOLUME- my backgrounds create volume. They add depth to the photos.
LINE- I chose to put my axis on a downward diagonal. As you follow the axis you venture down a timeline. This axis allows for different spacing between objects.
SPACE- since my axis is diagonal the largest space is in the middle of the collage, where the two axis meet up. In the larger space I used larger objects to represent the change in my life. The major change in my life defines my character and therefore needs to be the focus of attention.
SCALE- As I mentioned earlier the larger objects are meant to represent a change in my life, and therefore are bigger. The smaller items are what took me down a road to change.
SYMBOLISM
When it came to making my collage I chose each piece for specific reasons. I only used pictures that I have taken or made myself. I chose to represent these with black and white, because I choose to leave my past in my shadows and look towards the future. I have everything facing the bottom corner because that is my future. The last two items down my axis are the same outline, a person with a microphone. The first one is filled with pictures I took at sporting events. Life is just a big game to me, with lots of rounds. Some rounds I win, some I lose, but either way I play it like a champion. Therefore I used major sporting events, playoff football games, the Super Bowl, and the NBA Championships are all shown. I chose not to show any pictures with friends because I move around a lot and don’t spend as much time with my close friends as I would prefer. I keep in touch with people on the phone and therefore they are distant and are not a crucial part of my life. I use a picture of the US flag in the bottom left corner. Not only did I choose to not draw the whole flag I changed the stars section. I’m Jewish, so I added a Star of David. I wrote on top of it ‘It Sick When I Get My Bic Pen.’ This was something I wrote a few years ago that has stuck with me, because when I get to the pen I can make magic happen. I think that through the pen I can help start a revolution, like Thomas Jefferson. I don’t like the state of my nation so I want change. Lastly I have the last piece in the bottom right corner. As said earlier, this is my future, exploding into the world. I put a heart in my future, because without heart I won’t get where I need to be. Overall I think my collage exemplifies what I think art is. Art is personal.
